'Hawaiian Dick' is back, and he's 'Screaming Black Thunder'

And word is that everyone's fav four-color ex-cop is actually here to stay.

Newsarama has posted the first six pages of Hawaiian Dick #1, which is--believe it or not--the first issue of the new ONGOING SERIES by co-creator B. Clay Moore and new artist Scott Chantler ("Northwest Passage").

Dick's other creator, Steven Griffin, is handling colors and letters. The debut story arc is entitled "Screaming Black Thunder."

According to Moore, "Thunder" picks up right after "The Last Resort," which was the previous 4-part miniseries.

The first Hawaiian Dick mini-series, "Byrd of Paradise," hit comic shops in December '02, followed the next year by "Last Resort." The second mini ran into numerous publication delays, finally finishing up in July '06.

(This writer can attest to that; he spent an absurd length of time tracking down issues 3 & 4.)

In '04, Dick was optioned by New Line Cinema for development as a feature film, purportedly to star that Jackass, Johnny Knoxville.

Dick is set in a noirish version of fifties' Honolulu. Byrd, an alcoholic former mainland "dick," and his comrades, 300-pound detective Mo Kalama and gorgeous waitress-turned-assistant Kahami, already have faced Hawaii's legendary supernatural anomalies, as well as Irish gangsters and other assorted cheerful types.

The 32-page Hawaiian Dick Numero Uno surfs into comic shops this November.
