Lost: Episode 6:07 Dr. Linus

Well well Mr Linus, looks like your past has finally caught up with you...
I have been eagerly anticipating a Ben Linus centric ep all season and this one does not disappoint..in one way, and in another, it kinda does. But thats more about the choices made with the character than the actual quality of the episode.

On the island Ben, running terrified through the jungle bumps back into Ilana, Sun etc as they make their escape from the temple which Un-Locke has now decimated. They decide to go back to the beach. But on the way Ilana gives Jacob's ashes to Miles and asks him to find out what really happened to him. Miles spills the beans immediately telling her that Ben killed him. I found this a little strange. I was expecting Miles to lie and then tell Ben he had something on him, certainly more in keeping with his character. They way he flat out rats him out seemed very weaselly..even for Miles! I mean sure he doesn't owe Ben anything..but he doesn't owe Ilana anything either, and he has known Ben longer. Anyway, as the others set up camp Ilana ties Ben to a tree by his foot and orders him at gun point to dig his own grave! As this is happening we see flash sideways Ben the school teacher make a power play for the principals job. He attempts to blackmail the principal but when he realizes that this will go against Alex(In this timeline one of Ben's favorite students) getting a recommendation for a good college he desists. This Ben also hungers for power..but not so much so that he will go against his moral principals. Unlike our(funny, I still can't think of the alternate folk as real characters) Ben, who sacrificed Alex to maintain his power position on the island. All of this he admits to Ilana after, aided by Un-Locke, he manages to get the drop on her..but instead of shooting her(something he would have done in a second not too long ago) he breaks down and tries to explain why he killed Jacob. This is an intense powerful scene with another fantastic performance by Michael Emerson.

The other island goings on involve Hurley and Jack bumping into Richard Alpert as they return to the temple. Richard says because Jacob touched him that he is immortal..sort of. He can't kill himself, but someone else can..and that someone is Jack. Because since he found out Jacob went and died without filling him in on his purpose, Richard feels like blowing himself up back in the Black Rock. Awwww:( But, Jack cops on now that he has been "chosen" somehow, and believes that since he is a candidate that he will not be allowed to die either. And sure enough, he lights the dynamite..but the fuse dies before the boom. Are Jack and the other candidates unkillable now?..Or just un-suicidable!

Oh, one other very interesting thing is that in the alternate timeline, Ben's ailing father mentions that they were once part of the Dharma Initiative on the island! This is the first mention of the island from any of the Un-Losties(Like that? Thats mine:) after all, in this timeline isn't it under water? What did that? The bomb? I dunno..if thats the case a lot of other stuff rears its head which I haven't got the sobriety to go into now.

Anyway, a great ep yet again..BUT, I don't want Ben to be a good guy now. I mean a proper good guy. He has always been strangely sympathetic and even likable..but he's still an evil little shit! Just because he realizes the error of his ways, doesn't mean I want the best villain in TV history to go all noble on us. As we are greeted by yet another slow mo reunion scene between Jack, Hurley, Alpert and the Ilana group(is it just me or do the always walk around that same corner of bushes?), Ben watches alone and outcast..but with hope since Ilana says she will "have him"(In the good way..not the East End villain way). We then see a periscope watching the island..its only that miserable faced [frick]er Charles Widmore in a submarine!

Here is a short promo for next weeks Sawyer centric ep, Recon..
