HBO Picks Up Game Of Thrones For A Series

Fantasy novelist George R.R. Martin couldn't be happier!
HBO has picked up a nine-episode (plus pilot) order for Game of Thrones, a fantasy epic based on the books by George R.R. Martin. First published in 1996, the series revolves around the fictional Seven Kingdoms and the adventures of Lord Stark of Winterfell and his children. The pilot stars Mark Addy, Sean Bean, Jennifer Ehle and Lena Headley, among others, and was directed by Tom McCarthy. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who wrote the pilot script, also serve as exec producers. The pilot was shot in Northern Ireland and other European and North African locations in late 2009. Expect to see the series some time in 2011.

Monday, on his web journal, Martin was really looking forward to see his novel come to life on screen:

"From the start of this, I've told myself, 'Don't get too emotionally invested in this, or you will be devastated if it doesn't go.' Wise words, those. I'm a smart guy.

But easier said than done. I've failed. I am totally emotionally invested, and if HBO does indeed decide to pass, for whatever reason, I will be gutted."

Upon learning Tuesday that HBO had indeed picked up the series, Martin simply posted this:

DogsOfWar-I haven't read this series but it has a pretty avid fan base. Best of luck to you on this Mr. Martin!
