A Tale Of Two Excaliburs

Two different movies are being developed about King Arthur's tale
Warner Brothers has put an untitled Arthur project into motion for director Guy Ritchie over at Hollywood Gang production studio. They will be hammering out a script based upon Warren Ellis' treatment. Ellis wants us to make sure to note that his take “differs from the prior 751 King Arthur movies in many ways, but perhaps most obviously in that it is very specifically about the gathering of the Knights.”

Standard development deal, right? Here is where the story gets a little more interesting. Warner Bros. already has a production deal for a remake of John Boorman's 1981 Excalibur! Bryan Singer, who is set up over at Legendary, has been attached to this project for some time now.

So, we have two Excalibur movies, both in script development and both set up through Warner Bros. Where does that leave one of the greatest sword and sorcery tales? My guess is Ritchie's version has the inside track. It already has a script treatment and Singer is working on some pretty big tentpole movies that should take up some time named X-Men: First Class and Battlestar Galactica.
