Alan Scott and Hal Jordan
Hi there everyone I am Jack and I am here to talk about the Green Lantern Corp its History, Present and Future. While I will be focusing on the Silver Age Green Lantern and up to the Present, I believe that the Golden Age Alan Scott is just as important to show a different concept and outlook on the persona of Green Lantern. In fact I think that perhaps is where we should start.
Alan Scott as Green lantern was a railroad engineer who had came across a Railroad lantern that held a mystical green flame that had fallen to Earth several thousand years ago. The mystical green flame had said it would act out three times Once to Bring Life, Once to bring Death and Once to Bring Power. During its years on Earth Before Alan Scott found the Lantern it had alaready Brought Life and Death. The Flame told Alan that it needed to Fashion a ring out of the Lantern to give him Great Power. This is why Alans Ring is in a form of a Railroad Lantern. He Chose not only the color Green in his costume but Red and Yellow.
Now it is common knowledge that a Green Lanterns ring does not work against yellow due to a impurity in the battery. This impurity has been set loose and now only rookies or those under great diress have this problem now. Alan Scotts ring did not have a problem working against the color yellow and would work well when pitted against any color of the spectrum. The Mystical flame was said to represent the strenght of green growing things and so instead of the yellow impurity it would not work against wood or other plant basied objects. In fact Alan Scott and frequent running partner Jay Garreck even had a storyline with Abin Sur and Abin used Alans ring to defeat a Foe who was using a yellow force field to prevent Abin from defeating him then returned Alans ring to him.
This is not to say that Alan Scott and Hal Jordan did not have any adventures together through the years as they did during the Green lantern comics run in the 1960's. This was due to Hal Jordan being the Green Lantern of Earth Two and Alan Scott being the Green Lantern of Earth One. They were in fact friends and had several well wrote and nicely drawn stories together. My favorite is the one where Alans sidekick Doiby Dickles marries the Queen of a world after he tried to get her to marry Alan Scott.
Now lets change to Hal Jordan now. Guy, John, Kyle, and the rest will come later. Hal is a test pilot working in a flight simulator that flies off when the ring Abin Sur is wearing summons him to Abins crash site. Hal is giving the ring and becomes the Green Lantern of Space Sector 2814. His ring is also green but is a circle with a bar going across the top and bottom representing a lantern. Hal Outfit loses the red and yellow along with the cape and pirate shirt. It is streamlined with green and black the start if the spandex trend of skintight formfitting costumes. Yes Superman had it first but through the years it was not the norm as it is now. Several Heros that were revamped in the late 1950's like Green Lantern, The Flash and Wonder Woman in later years.
Hal has through the Years been both a test pilot and a Active duty officer in the United States Air Force. He has through the story lines been Savior and Villain a fact that to this day shows up in the storyline to this day. As many Green Lanterns do not like or trust Hal but as the Blackest Night Shows No Lanterns way is left alone in the dark.
