I take a look at one of Danny Boyle's 2007 space thriller.
I'm a fan of Danny Boyle, so I'm not sure how this film flew under my radar. After a fellow CBM member suggested watching the film in a discussion about Chris Evans being up for the role of Captain America, I figured I'd give it a try.

The film follows a crew of astronauts and scientists on a mission to essentially re-ignite the dying sun, and essentially save humanity. Come to find out, this is actually the second attempt at the mission and the first ship is discovered orbiting around the planet Mercury. Faced with the problem of lack of oxygen and an unexpected proverbial wrench in the spokes, the crew must fight to complete the mission, regardless of the consequences.

The film has quite a few similarities with one of my favorite sci-fi/horror films, "Event Horizon," which is quite a turn off to me. Although the main plot is different, there were many minor details that matched up almost to a T. It is not the most faced paced film, but it will hold your attention enough to make you want to see it through to the end.

The cinematography is unique, with some rather stunning shots at times. There are also some scenes that are just plain obnoxious and disorientating, pulling you out of the film. It's quite different for Boyle, as it has a more artistic feel to it. But it just doesn't work as a whole.

The main reason for me watching the film, was to see how Chris Evans pulls off a more dramatic role. While he won't be in the running for an Academy Award anytime soon, he's decent enough. I actually liked him better in "Push" and the Fantastic 4 films. The rest of the cast was hit or miss, some better than others. I was surprised to see a rather cameo of sorts by Mark Strong, who will be playing Sinestro in the up-coming "Green Lantern" film.

It's a decent film, but nothing you need to run out and see. If you want a movie to watch that is a bit different but still entertaining, then give this one a whirl!
