American Idiot Headed to the Big Screen?
The Broadway bound musical may be headed to the silver screen
The Grammy Award winning Green Day Album has inspired a musical that is headed to Broadway, but it also may be headed to theaters. Deadline is reporting that Tom Hanks' company, Playtone, is looking at adapting the story/musical in to a feature film. The story follows three young men from a small town whose paths take very different directions- one enlists in the army, another becomes an addict living on the streets and the last stays home to care for his girlfriend who has become pregnant. The dialogue would be mostly made up of Green Day's songs from the "American Idiot" and "21st Century Breakdown" albums.
Playtone's last film adaptation was "Mamma Mia!" which turned out to be one of 2008's biggest films, bringing in over $600 million worldwide. This would join the ranks of other musicals in the works like "Wicked" and "Rock of Ages."
ecksmanfan: I'm a big fan of this album and it's follow-up "21st Century Breakdown" and have always thought that this "rock opera" would make a very powerful movie.
