Disney's "Alice" hits a Milestone and an update on future Disney Franchises

The Tim Burton directed "Alice in Wonderland" hits a huge milestone, plus an update on "The Great and Powerful Oz" and Disney's "Jungle Cruise" film adaptation and more
Disney has stated that the 3D adaptation of "Alice in Wonderland," starring Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, has reached and surpassed the $1 Billion point in the global box office. In the world of 'non-sequels," that puts it only behind "Avatar" and "Titanic."

After seeing how well that franchise was received, it's not surprising to see that Disney is exploring other franchises to spew out to the masses. It was announced a while back that they would be working on a newer, updated version of the Wizard of Oz...which now has a name: "The Great and Powerful Oz." They are in the process of finding a director and they have a few names in the mix. First is the critically acclaimed Sam Mendes whose film credits include "Jarhead," "American Beauty" and "Bond 23" (that is, if it proceeds and gets itself out of limbo). Next is Adam Shankman who has directed films more oriented towards the family, like "The Pacifier" and "Hairspray." More recently, the studio has been in talks with Timur Bekmambetov, most noted for his work on "Wanted" and its upcoming sequel. A script is currently being drafted by Mitchell Kapner.

Another franchise that Disney and Timur Bekmambetov are looking at the "Jungle Cruise" ride. Supposedly, they have been looking at this for quite some time, but may be taking some action soon, but Bekmambetov has pitched an idea to the Mandeville producers.

Disney has also just signed a seven figure deal to revive and reinvent its Cinderella franchise which will be scripted by "The Devil Wears Prada" scribe Aline Brosh McKenna.
