'X-FILES 2' confirmed by Fox

20th Century Fox confirms that Chris Carter will bring a new X-Files movie to theaters next summer.
On Wednesday (31 October), Twentieth Century Fox finally confirmed a new X-Files motion picture by announcing a 25 July '08 theatrical release date. The long-rumored second adaptation of the award-winning series reunites series stars David Duchovny (Californication) and Gillian Anderson (The Last King of Scotland) and serves as the feature directorial debut of creator Chris Carter (Harsh Realm).

The as-yet untitled flick’s storyline, written by Carter and Frank Spotnitz (Millennium), remains a secret. What is known is that, unlike the '98 film, X-Files 2 is a stand-alone story that takes the complex relationship between Fox Mulder (Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Anderson) in unexpected directions.

The X-Files TV series premiered fairly quietly on the young FOX network on 10 September '93. It followed the adventures of two very different FBI agents as they investigated unsolved cases dealing with the paranormal, the supernatural, and the downright bizarre. The show’s conspiratorial tone and blend of paranoia, horror and suspense made it as much of a phenomenon abroad as it was in the United States.

Among the show's numerous awards, Anderson won a '97 Emmy for her outstanding portrayal of the skeptical but fiercely-loyal Scully.

The first feature film was a worldwide box office success, but a critical failure that disappointed many fans. The TV show, which spawned the (very) short-lived spin-off, The Lone Gunmen, ended in '02 after nine seasons, the last two of which featured only guest appearances by Duchovny.

It is unknown at this time whether or not the new film will ignore the god-awful series finale.

The X-Files 2 invades theaters on July 25th, 2008.
