'PAINKILLER JANE' vet to be SMALLVILLE's Black Canary

On January 10th, Black Canary swoops into Smallville in the form of ex-Painkiller Jane star Alaina Huffman.
He promised some new heroes this season, and now Smallville co-creator Alfred Gough has confirmed for TVGuide's RICH SANDS that Black Canary will land in Clark Kent's hometown this January. Gough also announced that the DC superhero would come in the form of Canadian actor Alaina Huffman, formerly of Sci Fi Channel’s Painkiller Jane.

Like the comic book version, Smallville’s fishnet-wearing BC is a martial-arts expert with a destructive high-pitched scream which she calls the "canary cry."

The physically-demanding role should be ably handled by the athletic Huffman, a former runway model and mother of two, who has an impressive list of independent films and genre TV appearances (such as Tru Calling) to her credit.

In DC Comics' history, Black Canary and Green Arrow have a complex romance that verges on the epic. So, it's only fitting that the Smallville episode "Siren" features the return of Oliver Queen (Justin Hartley), fresh from a series of attacks on Lex Luthor's facilities with his new Justice League.

But, Smallville's pair will not meet cute, because Canary swoops in as a vigilante on Luthor's payroll. And fans know that Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) is no fan of the Emerald Archer.

Exec producer Gough, however, promises that BC and GA won't remain enemies. "At the end of the episode you clearly see that they have some sparks."

The Smallville episode "Siren" premieres 10 January '08 on the CW.
