The Week in 'TREK': Updates on the Film

Casting news, quotes from the actors and more on the highly-anticipated Star Trek feature.
McGillion: Thrilled to be in Trek

"Stargate Atlantis" vet Paul McGillion has already finished shooting his part in Star Trek, which took a few days back in November. It appears he will be in a scene with Chris Pine as Kirk.

The Scottish actor wouldn't discuss his role, but he did tell TrekMovie's ANTHONY PASCALE that it was a "thrill" to work with director J.J. Abrams, and he's "sure the fans are going to be in for one heck of a ride."

Orci praises Pine

Star Trek co-writer and executive producer Roberto Orci explained to SciFi's TARA DILULLO BENNETT that Chris Pine was cast as the new Kirk because he "has the maverick nature of an extremely motivated, cocky guy who doesn’t play by the rules, who is intelligent enough and can command sufficient respect to be an astronaut. Chris has a great sense of humor but is also able to get serious on a dime to step in and out of leadership while being fun."

Morrison is Kirk’s Mom

TrekMovie.com has confirmed that Jennifer Morrison ("House") has already completed work as the pregnant Winona Kirk, mother of James T. The new Star Trek will be the first appearance for Kirk’s parents outside the non-canonical Trek novels.

Nichols is an Orion

Rachel Nichols ("Alias") will be playing an Orion. The name of her character is not known, but it is a new character. This will be the first appearance of a green-skinned Orion in a Star Trek feature film.

Cho on Sweet Sulu's Badasssss Song

New Sulu John Cho revealed to Star Trek Magazine that he (gasp!) isn’t a hard core fan, but that he has "more than a casual association" with Trek. He has been reviewing DVDs, but wants to "let J.J. dictate" how he should approach the role.

"Sulu’s going to be fun because he’s extremely skilled and a badass," said Cho, who prepared for the role with fight training. "It’s just a level of commitment and learning that I’ve never had to do for any part. It’s been great."

Other updates

Australian Chris Hemsworth has wrapped up his scenes as George Kirk, Sr.

Zachary Quinto (young Spock) told Entertainment Weekly that we will know "within a matter of weeks" whether or not his "Heroes" co-star (and director Abrams's best bud) Greg Grunberg will appear in the film.

Writer Harlan Ellison disproved the rumors that the new movie would involve the Guardian of Forever.

Some Star Trek scenes will be shot at Long Beach City Hall, as well as in Lincoln Park, Ca.

Star Trek is slated for release on Christmas Day 2008.
