Well, Well, Well, My Michelle.....

A 14 year old Slash composes a letter to inspiration of Guns N' Roses classic.

A recently unearthed love letter written by a then-14-year-old Slash in 1979 proves that before the guitarist was providing riffs for Guns n’ Roses and Velvet Revolver, he was a kid writing cheesy compliments and doodling pot leafs on looseleaf paper to impress girls. The blog Letters of Note, via Hard Rock Memorabilia, posted Slash’s handwritten missive to Michelle Young last week, giving us a glimpse of Saul Hudson’s teenage mind — he writes about how he regrets that his love of the guitar ruined his relationship with Young, who would later be the inspiration behind the Appetite For Destruction track “My Michelle.”

In the letter, Slash ruminates on his weekend, telling Young that he went to the Los Angeles venue Starwood and “spent pretty much of my weekend on cloud 9 if you know what I mean.” (Translation: He was stoned) “To get off the subject, you look really nice today, you get prettier & prettier every day,” the young Casanova writes, adding, “The girls are pretty (I still think you cuter than any of the girls there).” Later, Slash brags about going to see an up-and-coming band called Quiet Riot the next weekend and predicts, “One of these days I’ll play [Starwood].” While he never ended up playing the Starwood — it closed up shop just two years later — he ended up more than exceeding his own 14-year-old expectations.

Dear Michele,

Your letter scared me, upon first glance, I hadn't any idea what it was about, but when you told me, it struck in a strange way, I hadn't any idea that I talked about my guitar so often, I'm going to have to change that, no matter who I talk to.

It's a drag that it screwed up our relationship, you should have told me sooner, but I don't think that's the only reason, you just don't like me that much, and I can see why, because I'm a hard person to get along with at times.

But any I'm glad we got that straight, thank you for not lying to me. To get off the subject, you look really nice today, you get prettier & prettier every day. My weekend was pretty good. Steve came by and we went to a couple parties, and we went to the Starwood, I spent pretty much of my weekend on cloud 9 if you know what I mean.

I had never been in the Starwood before, like, we hung around outside, but I've never been inside. It's not such a hot place, I mean the Bands are alright, the girls are pretty (I still think you cuter than any of the girls there) the drugs are cool but it's not a place I would want to waste my life at. The most exciting part of the night was, a guy mouthed off to this black guy, and the black got a hundred friends and chased him around all Hollywood. It's a pretty crazy place. I'm going there next week to see Quiet Riot, because I hear there pretty good. One of these days I'll play there.

Love you

Saul

Thats some funny stuff. Nice find Angelo. I especially liked this line:

"the drugs are cool but it's not a place I would want to waste my life at."

Ahh, if only we could've seen our own warning signs.

I left you a comment on your Hey! Have You Heard These Songs? article

Lol, freakin' sweet. I remember reading that Slash got his name from his neighbor's dad, saying that he was 'a really fast runner'. I find that a stereotype since he's black (or half or whatever), but who cares.
