October 9, 2012 – Los Angeles, CA – Born out of the desire to maintain creative control over programming, to empower fans and viewers and to eliminate network and studio costs, Brian Lane (“MacGyver,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation”) and partner Donna Cohen are pioneering a new broadcasting model with the launch of as-free NotMyMothersTV.net and its first series “Secret Bedfellows,” it was announced by Lane and Cohen. The 60-day fundraising effort begins today, Tuesday, October 9th, with the on-line debut of the edgy, sci-fi comedy’s complete half-hour pilot episode, plus many other filmed assets for viewers to explore, all through Indiegogo.com (www.indiegogo.com/secretbedfellows).
“A writer’s vision for a series isn’t always consistent with the business needs of the network that airs it, and fans don't understand why their favorite shows get canceled despite their loyalty and support,” Lane explained. “It's time we changed all that. Primetime broadcast-quality, scripted television can be produced for less than 10% of what studios and networks pay, if only you cut out network and studio overhead. The Internet allows you to do just that and a viewer who wants to actively participate in network content can fully support an entire TV season for the cost of one cup of coffee house coffee.”
Surprisingly, Lane’s notions for the future of television are backed by Hollywood players at the highest levels. “If you can bring down costs while maintaining quality, and be directly responsive to viewers, that’s a winning formula for everybody,” noted David Ladd, independent film producer and former executive vice president of production for MGM Studios.
To help fund their novel venture, Lane and Cohen have selected the popular crowdfunding site Indiegogo.com. Viewers interested in becoming founding members of the network and backing the production of subsequent episodes to complete the first season of “Secret Bedfellows” can contribute money at various “tiers” starting at $6.00. Each tier delivers its own unique perks to reward viewers for participating. All levels will always have a say in casting, creative content, and network pick-ups and cancellations.
Additionally, all network members will be able to pitch their own ideas for series and movies as the network moves forward. Network members will even determine whether there will be additional fundraising for future series or whether the network will sell ads or seek other financing instead.
“Secret Bedfellows” is the byzantine brainchild of Brian Lane, who earned the respect of Trekkies everywhere when he penned the fan-favorite episode of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” called “Elementary, Dear Data.” He also devised the cosmological science for the TNG series bible at the request of “Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry.
“Secret Bedfellows” reveals the truth about the universe – there are NO Earthlings! And the Head Man (comedian Michael Rayner) has the top-secret government files that prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that everyone here on Earth is an alien being, creature, or monster. In the pilot, viewers will see these secrets of the universe revealed through the story of The Head Man, Diamond (Burnadean Jones, “Suburgatory,” “The Closer”), and Jeremy (Matthew Prater, “Mating 101”). As the latter two take their “friends with benefits” relationship to a new level, they find themselves dealing with some shocking personal and intergalactic revelations, proving that you never really know who – or what – someone is. Storylines in subsequent episodes introduce additional unique characters and lay out a mythology of science, fun and fantasy that rivals iconic sci-fi series.
“Secret Bedfellows” is written and directed by Lane. Cohen serves as producer and online experience expert. Micheal C. Pounds executive produces. The series is being produced independently and each 30-minute episode will be distributed via NotMyMothersTV.net, a populist, broadcast quality, internet television network that will launch along with the series, giving fans the opportunity to have their voices heard and ultimately impact the creative direction of scripted television entertainment, without network and studio interference or cost.
