Superman Returns Plot Spoilers

What is Lex Luthor up to in the new movie?
Warning: Spoilers

A preview of 2006 movies in this week’s Entertainment Weekly reveals a bit more of the plot of Bryan Singer's Superman Returns.

The article goes over what's already known by most fans: the film picks up the storyline after Superman II when the Man of Steel (Brandon Routh) is returning to Earth after a long hiatus to find Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth) dating Perry White's nephew (James Marsden) and raising a child, whose parentage is unknown.

"Not that Superman is completely irrelevant–not when there are airplanes and space shuttles crashing, plus a dastardly scheme by Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey) involving a rich old lady, a mysterious island, and other spoilerish elements," the article reveals.

Meanwhile, Routh thanks his resemblance to a former Superman actor for his entry into showbiz. "When my first manager signed me, he said I looked like Christopher Reeve. If I didn't, I don't know if he would have said 'I want to work with you.'"

Other tidbits:
  • Metropolis has been doing "just fine" since Superman's absence.
  • Smallville's Tom Welling was never seriously considered for the lead role as it would've effectively ended the hit WB TV series.
  • Unused footage of the late Marlon Brando as Jor-El from Superman will be used in the film.
  • "Superman was a pretty vicious film" to make, says Singer, now working on F/X. Expensive? "Quite–but not nearly $250 million expensive as 'some moron' (Singer's description) recently attributed to him," the magazine says. "I take enormous pride in being fiscally responsible," Singer says. "That really p***ed me off."
