‘Supergirl’ Spin-Off Already?

Faster than a speeding bullet, rumors are spreading that Kara Zor-El may get her own Smallville spinoff series.
New Smallville resident Laura Vandervoort had barely gotten those impossibly high cheekbones fully into frame when the word "spinoff" took to the wind.

TV Guide confidently publishes as fact the rumor that Kara Zor-El (aka Supergirl) may be headed toward her own series. But the gap between possibility and probability will only be bridged by Kara's--and Smallville's--popularity.

But the showrunners haven't turned their backs on Kara's cousin just yet. Smallville co-creator Al Gough is on-record that the team still hopes to go for one more season, even if popular bald baddie Lex Luthor decides to go walkabout when Michael Rosenbaum's contract expires after Season Seven.

"It's up to the producers and the viewers, I guess," Vandervoort said. "When the shows start airing, they'll probably go by the feedback to see what they want to do with me."

Despite being credited as a regular, Vandervoort is on a "recurring character" contract, with a limited-episode commitment that can be extended based on viewer response to the character.

And, at the moment, Kara's future is anything but certain. Supergirl's debut pulled only a 2.9 rating/5 share, according to Fast Nationals from Nielsen Media Research. For Thursday night, The CW finished in last place with a 2.4/4.

So, all appearances to the contrary, the Girl of Steel had better learn to walk before she can really fly.

Smallville airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
