George Clooney to play Duke in the 'G.I. JOE' movie?!

A fresh rumor catching the California wind whispers a new name for the part of Duke in the live-action G.I. Joe film: Batman & Robin star George Clooney.
The IESB’s ROBERT SANCHEZ picked up a rumor on Monday (Oct 29) that producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers) has offered the role of Duke in Paramount Pictures' live-action G.I. Joe flick to Oscar Winner George Clooney (Batman & Robin).

The rumor, as passed on by "a few Hollywood agents," claims that Clooney departed from Joe Carnahan’s film White Jazz not only because of scheduling conflicts but also because he's in search of a potential blockbuster.

Previous reports suggested that Mark Wahlberg (Shooter) was the #1 candidate to headline the Stuart Beattie-scripted flick. However, that may not have panned out.

Sanchez's sources did not say whether or not Clooney was considering the offer. However, the IESB promised to check in with Clooney’s reps at CAA on Tuesday (Oct 30).

While this is officially a rumor, the IESB insists that its track record on the G.I. Joe developments has been Olympic-level, from the hiring of Stephen Sommers (The Mummy) as director to the knighting of Beattie (Pirates of the Caribbean) as sreenwriter.

Duke (code name of First Sergeant Conrad S. Hauser) is G.I. Joe field commander and generally was the main character on the '80s animated series.

"I know so much about G.I. Joe," admitted Moviehole's CLINT MORRIS, "that I actually thought the lead character's name was...G.I. Joe."
