Classic comic character MANDRAKE coming to the big screen

The Tudors star Jonathan Rhys Meyers is set to make some magic in director Chuck Russell's Mandrake.
Chuck Russell (The Scorpion King) will direct Golden Globe Winner Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Mission: Impossible 3) as the title hero of Omega Entertainment's and Baldwin Entertainment Group's Mandrake, reports STUART KEMP of the Hollywood Reporter.

The film is a contemporized adaptation of the classic comic strip about a dapper illusionist who uses his skills in the service of justice. Created in 1934 by Lee Falk (The Phantom), Mandrake went on to appear on radio, in movie serials and in animation.

"This is a rare opportunity to reinvent one of the all-time classic comic book characters and create a new kind of hero for international audiences," Russell said.

Baldwin Entertainment chief Howard Baldwin said he is pleased to be bringing Mandrake to the big screen. BEG's next project will be a big-screen adaptation of Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, starring Angelina Jolie (Beowulf).

Mandrake is scheduled to shoot in China and the U.S. in early '08.
