'Deathlok' Movie Uncertain At This Point, Says Screenwriter
Marvel Comics hosts a wealth of characters that could eventually wind up in movie theaters, but fans of Deathlok shouldn't hold their breath — the cybernetic antihero isn't likely to arrive on film anytime soon.
David Self, co-writer of "The Wolfman" and Darren Aronofsky's long-developing "RoboCop" reboot, spoke with Superhero Hype about an old "Deathlok" screenplay he wrote several years ago. Despite Marvel Studios' increased activity with characters like Thor and Captain America, it doesn't sound like Deathlok is joining them quite yet.
"I don't know what's going [on] with that movie honestly," said Self. "I haven't talked to the producers recently about that."
Deathlok appeared most recently in a comic book miniseries from Marvel's MAX imprint. In that story, mercenary Luthor Manning is killed and resurrected as Deathlok, a cybernetic killer that can be used as a marketing tool.
"What happens if your company superstar—the face of your corporation—is killed?" writer Charlie Huston told MTV News of the series' premise back in October. "How do you end up with Deathlok in that culture? You end up with Deathlok because he looks cool and he can be marketed as a cool toy or a t-shirt."
While it's certainly an interesting take on the character, it's not likely in line with what Self wrote, as he hasn't worked on "Deathlok" in quite some time.
"I did a rewrite on it several years ago and it shows up on my IMDb [page] all the time," he said. "It's been a long while since I worked on it, but I would love to see that happen soon. I love that story and I love that character."
