Details on "Wolverine And The X-Men," and "The Spectacular Spider-Man"

Updates on the cancellation of animated series Wolverine and The X-Men and The Spectacular Spider-Man were provided over the weekend at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo convention.

New details on the cancellation of the animated series Wolverine and The X-Men and The Spectacular Spider-Man were provided during a Marvel Animation panel over the weekend at C2E2. C2E2 – short for the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo – is a convention spanning the latest and greatest from the worlds of comics, movies, television, toys, anime, manga and video games. Joe Quesada, the Creative Head for Marvel Animation, alongside Marvel Animation's Director of Development Josh Fine and Marvel PR Arune Singh, appeared at at the Marvel Animation panel. Financial issues and character rights are the primary reasons Wolverine and The X-Men and The Spectacular Spider-Man are no longer in production.

Concerning Wolverine and The X-Men, Fine states that financing with the main financial partner on the second season of the animated series fell through, resulting in the show being unable to move forward. Plenty of pre-production and script work was done before the financial trouble for the series became readily apparent. While unconfirmed, Liberation Entertainment’s current financial woes are rumored to have played a role in the scrapping of Wolverine and The X-Men’s second season.

Additionally, Fine mentioned he knows how the Wolverine and The X-Men animated series was originally planned to conclude and is exploring options on how to provide that information to fans of the series.

Moving on, Fine also commented on the recent news regarding the apparent end of the animated The Spectacular Spider-Man in lieu of the announcement of the all-new Ultimate Spider-Man animated series from Marvel Animation and Disney XD. Fine stated that while a press release is coming to clarify the matter, the end of The Spectacular Spider-Man came about due to Marvel Animation reacquiring the character’s animation rights, allowing Marvel full control over an animated series featuring Spider-Man for the first time in recent history. With the Spider-Man character animation rights back at Marvel, Sony Pictures Television opted to end any future production on The Spectacular Spider-Man. Since The Spectacular Spider-Man is a Sony Pictures Television product, and was produced and overseen by the company, it will be Sony’s decision on how to handle any further business with the late series.

The new Ultimate Spider-Man received a fast greenlight because, according to Fine, “the character is too great to not be in animation.” Ultimate Spider-Man is currently in early pre-production.

Additionally, Marvel Animation president Joe Quesada said the animated series The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Iron Man: Armored Adventures and The Super Hero Squad Show are all currently in different phases of production. No mention was made of the upcoming Thor animated series. The Black Panther animated series is also currently tied up in assorted legalities, but should be available to air on American television soon. Marvel Animation is expected to release more information on their entire production slate in the coming months.
