News on 2010’s “EA Sports MMA”

New Game to Battle UFC: Undisputed in 2010!
There’s a new heavyweight joining the ranks of Mixed Martial Arts. In this corner: EA Sports! For those who are not up on their video game news, EA Sports has plans to enter the ring (or octagon, for that matter) to battle “THQ for the Best MMA Videogame” Title, this coming year. The move was announced in the beginning of June. While the news, itself, shouldn’t shock (it was only a matter of time before they entered the world of MMA), the fighters rumored to be in this game are sure deliver a few blows to the current MMA Videogame Champion. That champion is UFC: Undisputed.

"We are looking obviously at every fighter that we can, that we feel is applicable from a quality level and then analyzing their image rights, and if they're available and we want them -- then we'll get them. If they're not then we'll move on to the next fighter." says EA Sports President Peter Moore. This is great news for fans who’d like to see “what if” scenarios or fight with fighters who are unavailable to THQ.
Among the rumored MMA superstars to be included in the game are ex-UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia and UFC Legend Randy Couture, as stated by Sylvia during a radio interview. Though, EA Sports has not confirmed these names, just yet. Couture, especially, would be a well-sought personality to acquire as he is not available in 2009’s Undisputed due to contract differences with the UFC.

Moore has also stated that he has an eye on current UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, Lyoto Machida. As for the rest, Moore is looking to release the names of fighters, “soon.” How soon? We’ll just have to wait and see.

“EA Sports MMA” may also span across multiple MMA organizations. Fedor Emelianenko, current WAMMA Heavy Weight Champion, and Gegard Mousasi, Dream Middleweight Champion are both rumored to be participating in a photo shoot for EA Sports, according to their tour schedules.

While these stars will help the 2010 release gain fan support, EA Sports will have to pack a lot of punch to compete with THQ. UFC Undisputed 2009 has been reviewed, almost unanimously, as one of the most realistic combat titles, to date. Reviews from both users and video games sites give it ratings between 7.5 and 10. And, with a sport like Mixed Martial Arts, that is very difficult to do. The striking, grappling, takedowns, and freestyle combat variables don’t always translate, on screen. But, THQ is a veteran in combat, creating some of the most notable WWE and WCW videogames of the 1990s and 2000s.

EA Sports is no slouch either. Their premier franchises include Madden Football, Tiger Woods PGA Tour, and (hitting a little closer to home) their extremely popular Fight Night series.

2010’s EA Sports MMA definitely has what it takes to enter the cage with new additions like Emelianenko and Couture. But, as we’ve learned from experience, stepping into the cage doesn’t mean you’re staying there!
