JOSS WHEDON: Talking Avengers 2 and Creative Parallels
In an interview with with the LA Times' Hero Complex, Joss Whedon (speaking prior to the opening of The Avengers) addresses the subject of Avengers 2 and his potential involvement, as well as parallels in his work and reveals where he's REALLY like to be.
One would think given the massive global impact of The Avengers that Whedon, like Marvel itself, would be chomping at the bit to dive back into the world of The Avengers. Surprisingly, though, the writer/director admitted, "I'm very torn. It's an enormous amount of work telling what is ultimately somebody else's story, even though I feel like I did get to put myself into it. But at the same time, I have a bunch of ideas, and they all seem really cool."
In the same conversation he addresses comparisons between the Oz character on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Mark Ruffalo's portrayal of Bruce Banner/Hulk, Tony Stark's near sacrifice compared to Kitty Prde's in the Whedon-written Astonishing X-Men comic, though doesn't necessarily feel he is purposely repeating himself. “I’m not going to do the same thing on purpose; I’m going to do the same thing because I’m creatively bereft, and I’ve run out of ideas,” he joked. “Awkward…”
Interestingly, when asked to compare the various group of misfits he's worked with creatively, he offers, "You know, I love all my raggedy children. But if I could be anywhere, I'd be on board Serenity."
Hmm. Given his newfound clout in Hollywood, maybe he actually will get to reunite with his Firefly/Serenity cast once again.
