Thor Opens with $66 Million!
The big question was whether or not Thor would have the kind of mass appeal that could propel its box office to Iron Man-like heights. While the final word on that is out at the moment, the Kenneth Branagh directed film is off to a great start.
There was a much excitement on Friday when Thor, starring Chris Hemsworth, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston and Kat Dennings, opened in 3,955 theaters in North America and 213 IMAX screens. Paramount is now reporting an estimated $66 million for Marvel Studios' fourth feature film for its opening weekend with $6.6 million of that (roughly 10%) coming from its IMAX screenings. That's an impressive average of $16.8k per site, as well as making it the ninth highest opening for a movie based on a Marvel character behind the three Spider-Man movies, two Iron Man films, the X-Men sequels and the Wolverine prequel. Internationally, the movie has also been an enormous hit, amassing $242 million in just two weeks.
