"V" and Battlestar Galactica Take Similar Big Screen Routes
Both "V" and Battlestar Galactica may be heading to the big screen, and this entry explores how that's even possible.
There is an interesting clause in the contracts offered by the Writer's Guild of America called the "Separation of Rights," which in certain instances gives creators a number of rights, among them the ability to retain some ownership of a property. What this means in the case of "V" is that originator Kenneth Johnson has the ability to proceed with a big screen version of his original mini-series, and create sequels from that. While Johnson cannot do a new television series, the feature film rights remain his. Now Glen A. Larson is exercising similar rights to bring his version of Battlestar Galactica to the big screen through Universal Pictures. It would seem safe to assume that this version of Galactica will have no connection to Ron Moore's reimagining of the concept for the SciFi Channel, and could, instead, be a continuation of the original series.
