Serenity to Fly Again?

Joss Whedon’s ode to Star Wars may be flying again thanks to strong DVD sales and fanatical “Browncoats.”
Unfortunately, Serenity (2005), with a budget estimated at $40M, under-performed at the box office, with the movie grossing only $25.5M domestically. Once again, things looked dire for the future of Whedon’s space-western opus.

When Serenity was released on DVD, it reached #1 in sales on Amazon.com and spent two weeks on the Billboard Top DVD Sales chart, sparking rumors that a sequel could be in the works. In an August 2007 interview with Amazon.com, Whedon had this to say about the possibility of a sequel:

"You know, whether or not anybody who's involved would be available at that point—everybody's working, I'm happy to say—is a question, but whether I would want to do another one is not a question."

Now, even cast members are speculating about the possibility of Serenity flying again. Alan Tudyk, known to fans as Hoban "Wash" Washburne, pilot of Serenity, told Clint Morris of Moviehole.com:

They had to put [the new DVD] out because they’ve been selling out of the other one and so Universal’s like ‘So, let’s do another one’. And now… there’s now a chance there’s going to be another movie.

Will the Serenity fans—who call themselves “Browncoats” after the simple brown dusters worn by the Independent Faction—prevail against the conventional wisdom of Hollywood that says a twice-failed property must die? Can Whedon pull off another miracle? Let’s hope so!
