Chris Pine Confirmed as James T. Kirk in New Star Trek Film
Chris Pine, who starred opposite Lindsay Logan in the lackluster Just My Luck (2006), has been confirmed as the new captain of the USS Enterprise.
Abrams had said in the past that Pines was his only choice to play Kirk, but that scheduling problems with his other production, White Jazz, might prevent that from happening. Now that Pines is out of White Jazz, it seems there’s nothing to stop him from taking the captain’s chair. On his blog, Carnahan posted this statement:
“The young man playing Junior Stemmons has opted to 'go where no man has gone before' and thus, had to bow out of WHITE JAZZ. I've been talking to him this past week and knew how tough the decision had to be for him.
I don't envy ever being in that spot but I gave him my full support, even if
it meant he didn't do JAZZ. I get it. You don't get opportunities like that
often and I told him as long as he could control as much of that process as possible and not get sucked into doing lesser sequels as a result of taking this gig, then good luck and God bless.”
Carnahan went on to say that he wanted to do more work with Pine down the road and that he had “already slotted” Pine in his upcoming film, Killing Pablo, about the Columbian drug lord Pablo Escobar’s assassination.
Other recent additions to the Star Trek IX cast include Eric Bana (Troy), who will be playing a mysterious villain named Nero, Zachary Quinto (Heroes) as Spock, Zoe Saldana (Blackout) as Nyota Uhura and Anton Yelchin (Alpha Dog) as Pavel Chekov.
Star Trek XI is slated for a December 2008 release.
