Young Kirk and Old Spock to Meet in STAR TREK XI?

Rumors that the plot to JJ AbramsStar Trek XI movie might revolve around time travel were given credence recently when new Captain Kirk, Chris Pine, mentioned he would be filming scenes with original Mr. Spock, Leonard Nimoy.
In a recent interview given at the Sundance Film Festival, the new captain of the Starship Enterprise, Chris Pine, appears to have given away a major plot point that confirms the earlier rumor was true. When asked if he felt any pressure living up to William Shatner’s rendition of Captain James T. Kirk, Pine said:

I actually feel the exact opposite. I think the biggest mistake I could ever do would be to try to re-create what Mr. Shatner did. There are certain qualities that Kirk has that are vital for someone who is a leader of men. And those qualities, I definitely wanted to take from what Mr. Shatner did in the original series. But my job is to take something new, to take that and build upon it, really do my own thing. I just feel no pressure when it comes to that.

Okay, nothing too sensational there, but when asked if he had spoken to Shatner, Pine stated:

I have not talked to Shatner. I wrote him a letter early on in the process and corresponded that way. I got a letter back from him, which is very nice. And I've met Mr. Nimoy a couple of times. He's been on set and we have a couple of scenes in the film, which will be nice, and I'm excited for those.

Wha-wha-what? The only way Chris Pine’s “Young Kirk” could film a few scenes with Leonard Nimoy’s “Old Kirk” is, you guessed it, if time travel was a major plot devise. It seems that earlier rumor was true!

Star Trek XI also stars Karl Urban (Pathfinder) as Leonard McCoy, Zachary Quinto (Heroes) as Spock and Eric Bana (Troy) as the film’s villain, Nero.

Star Trek XI is scheduled to be released December 25, 2008.
