Shia La Beouf Passes on Y: The Last Man

La Beouf calls Brian K. Vaughan's comic masterpiece his "favorite comic book," but thinks the role is too similar to other roles he has played recently.
Despite telling Wizard magazine, "Y: The Last Man is my favorite comic book," Shia La Beouf seems to no longer be interested in playing the part of the main character, Yorick Brown, in a big screen adaptation of the popular graphic series.

Produced by David S. Goyer, with screenwriter Carl Ellsworth and director D. J. Caruso, the team behind Disturbia, "Y" was originally scheduled to go into production in the fall of 2008. Now, however, it is doubtful if the film will ever be made, especially without the star power of La Beouf.

La Beouf told Wizard that the role is too similar to his Transformers character, Sam Witwicky:

"You take Sam and you put a monkey on his shoulder. I don't know if it's that big a differential. It seems like he's the ordinary guy in an extraordinary situation again."

The "monkey" La Beouf refers to is Ampersand, Yorick Brown's pet Capuchin monkey. In Y: The Last Man, Yorick and Ampersand are the only two mammals possessing a Y chromosome to survive a mysterious plague that sweeps the planet.

La Beouf went on to say:

"I'm not willing to make that movie currently and may be too old to play the role by the time it does come around."

La Beouf's next film, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, opens nationwide June 24th!
