Dark Shadows: A Classic Scene
The 2010 Dark Shadows Festival is only two weeks away, and to whet the appetite of fans, we're presenting a classic scene from the '60s soap featuring vampire Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid) and Burke Devlin (Anthony George).
In looking at Dark Shadows from a 2010 perspective (the show originally ran from 1966-71), there are many instances when things don't seem to work very well, with actors desperately searching for their lines, sets shaking and so on. But when Dark Shadows worked, it was magic.
During the initial Barnabas storyline, he decided that Collinwood governess Victoria Winters (Alexandra Moltke) was the reincarnation of his lost Josette Dupres, and was determined to make her his. One obstacle was her boyfriend, Burke Devlin. As a result, there was a growing, yet somewhat subtle, adversarial relationship developing between the two men.
This sequence in which the two men simply talk to each other over a drink at the tavern The Blue Whale, captures a bit of the magic of the show.
