GenCon Day Two: "Dark Sun" will return for Fourth Edition D&D

What does Wizards of the Coast have in store for the next year of "Dungeons and Dragons?" Two words... Dark... Sun.
No fluff in this article. There will be no coddling. I am getting right to the point. Perhaps the BIGGEST news for Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) in years... The return of the Dark Sun campaign setting. Highly anticipated for years, there has been doubt as to if it would ever resurface, and it will for fourth edition. Unfortunately, there were no major details. Actually, it is only a week into development, but it will be coming. Hell, it's already posted on the Wikipedia page.

Missed since the beginning of third edition, Dark Sun is the post-apocalyptic scenario for Dungeons and Dragons. Employing such aspects as survival, desolate wastelands, and the development of psionics in almost every creature. Gamers have been awaiting the return of Dark Sun for almost 20 years, and it is planned as the campaign focus for 2010.

Another cult favorite setting that often gets neglected is the Ravenloft horror setting. Pitting the players against the classic werewolves, zombies, vampires, and the eventual Dracula equivalent of Strah von Zarovich. The news, however, is not what is coming out for Dungeons and Dragons the RPG. Instead, it has been officially announced that the land Barovia will be hosting the first official D&D board game. Again, the details vague, but when it was announced, you heard the room smile.

Both Dark Sun and the board game are planned for an August 2010 release.

Speaking of board games, February 2010 will give us the release of the Dungeons and Dragons edition of Heroscape. Though the details are, you guessed it, vague, I would hope for some interplay with or aspects from D&D collectible miniatures.

All and all, some amazing news from Wizards of the Coast, and that is just the tip of the iceberg. Rumor has it, even more great news will be released tomorrow.

I can't wait!
