Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull?

According to The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision column, actor Hugo Weaving is the actor likely to become Captain American's villain, the Red Skull, in The First Avenger - if negotiations can be worked out.
In the Marvel comics," notes the column, "Red Skull has been Captain America’s archenemy since 1941, when he engaged in espionage and sabotage as Hitler’s right-hand man. In his final battle with the superhero, he was buried under the rubble of a bombed building but — as would occur later with Captain America — fell into a state of suspended animation. Both were revived in modern times.

"The dealmaking with Weaving is in a delicate stage that will play out in the next day or so. Agencies grouse that Marvel plays hardball in the negotiating process and also demands multi-movie commitments, though the latter usually applies to actors playing its heroes."

Weaving, of course, played Agent Smith in the Matrix trilogy and the elf ruler Elrond in The Lord of the Rings. He and First Avenger director Joe Johnston recently collaborated on The Wolfman.

According to the article, it's not definite yet; they're in the negotiating stage, where anything can happen.

Hmm, I wonder how that fits with The Hobbit filming?

my guesse is this will be a rumour, then there will be a short list of actors to play red skull which will be about 10 people long, which will change from week to week and 3 months from now there will still be no red skull announcement.

@Instigator Girl yeah, I agree with you. I hadn't thought of Waltz until you said it, but I think Hugo Weaving can do a decent job...as long as he can master a Russian accent and put some emotion in his voice! (Which, judging from Megatron, I'm sure he'll have no problem portraying an angry character!)

DANIEL DAY-LEWIS dammit!

(HUGO) Perfect [frick]ing SINESTRO! (for Skull lol?!)

I like Waltz for the authentic accent but other than that I'd hate to seem him play a Nazi again so soon. I think if they looked hard enough they could find another Austrian or German actor that could be menacing, evil Nazi fricker that is the Red Skull. Certainly Waltz is not he only unknown (at least in the US) talent from Europe.
