Exclusive Interview: Logan Lerman Talks Percy Jackson - Now on Blu-ray & DVD

With Percy Jackson arriving on Blu-ray and DVD, Earth's Mightiest is posting a previously unpublished interview with actor Logan Lerman which was conducted shortly before the film was released to theatres. Plus check out info on the disc.
For a time, Lerman had bee rumored to be the new actor to play Spider-Man in Sony's rebooted series, but that rumor has apparently died down.

In the following Q&A, get an insight into the actor and his views of working with director Chris Columbus and portraying a character that's the star of a series of best selling novels.

EARTH’S MIGHTIEST: How did you come to be involved with PERCY JACKSON?

LOGAN LERMAN: You know, I got the script from my agent, and it said Chris Columbus and I said I have to do it; I wanted to work with Chris Columbus. He had such an impact on me back in the day, so I wanted to be a part of his creation.

EARTH’S MIGHTIEST: Was it more Chris than the material itself?

LOGAN LERMAN: Well, before I read the script, I knew I wanted to do it. And then I read the material and that grabbed me immediately. It's a universal story – an average Joe brought into a big, extraordinary situation, and it's a lot of fun.

EARTH’S MIGHTIEST: Also, in terms of the character, what was it about Percy that appealed to you?

LOGAN LERMAN: It was the first time that I really had to do a lot of physical preparation for a role, and I really wanted to be part of a big action flick. I I had to learn how to scuba dive, I had to learn how to kick box, box, I had to learn sword fighting, sword training, I had to do the style that we actually learned – I'm blank on the name – we had to learn how to fly…

EARTH’S MIGHTIEST: You mean on wires?

LOGAN LERMAN: Yes, but it was really different, because some of the rigs were created specifically for me so it would look like I'm flying from my feet, if that makes sense. I had to learn to work with about five different kinds of rigs. But some of the more difficult ones to get used to were almost like a triangle formation, and they were attached to both of your feet, and if you moved up with one leg, the other leg you had to move down more, and you know, you used a lot of your own weight from the pressure you wanted to put on your feet. But we kind of had to create a language for flying so that the visual effects guys could add the waves at the sides of the shoes, so it looks like you're being propelled up, not like you were flying on a jetpack. It was a really challenging process trying to figure out, how do you drive from your feet? You're being lifted up by your feet. It was a fun process. We were able to create this whole language for how to fly using these shoes, which was a lot of fun.

EARTH’S MIGHTIEST: What's it feel like being up in the air like that?

LOGAN LERMAN: It's a rush, you know, when you're about to do all these scenes, and you're about to do things that would normally terrify you. You just kind of put your mind on the sidelines and you just do it. And it's just a rush. Especially when you're taking off, and flying right above the camera, just inches away from like, the lens, and people's heads, and you're swinging back and forth. It really did feel like you were flying, and it felt like you were in complete control.

EARTH’S MIGHTIEST: What was it like working with Chris?

LOGAN LERMAN: It was the most collaborative experience I ever had. He really brought me into the whole process of what he was going through, and the creative decisions, and he really was kind enough to let us all be involved. It created a comfort level that isn't as easily found on a set normally. Normally you have to create this artificial comfort when you walk onto a set, and he kind of creates it for you. I think he was very successful with this. He really was excited to make another one of these big films.

EARTH’S MIGHTIEST: I was surprised he did it.

LOGAN LERMAN: It is a little surprising, him going back into this same kind of grand film, but this is what he does best, and he's so great at it. Not many people can do it, because. it's such a difficult job to get one of these movies made. He's just so dedicated, and that's one of the things about him that makes this process work so well.

EARTH’S MIGHTIEST: What kind of journey does Percy go on?

LOGAN LERMAN: Percy's whole story really revolves around his wanting to get his mom back, so the driving force of his journey is saving his mom from the depths of the underworld. Seeing him battle the Hydra and battle Medusa, and go through all these crazy adventures just to try to do that, you really see his emotional path with trying to get his mom back, so that's a big character point.

EARTH’S MIGHTIEST: Do you like this guy?

LOGAN LERMAN: It’s hard not to. I mean, he's that guy who's made out to be the average guy in the extraordinary situation, so it's hard not to like him. It's so much fun to watch, and it's entertainment.

EARTH’S MIGHTIEST: What else is going on with you?

LOGAN LERMAN: You know, for the past year or so, I've been working on this movie non-stop. I'm hoping to break into the movie world one day too, from a behind the scenes point of view. Acting has always been a hobby that sort of worked for me, and I'll always do it for my whole life because I love to act, but I'm more interested in being behind the camera. I have an obsession with films. I just want to get my vision on the big screen one day.

EARTH’S MIGHTIEST: Then you must have been like a sponge working with Chris Columbus, watching his every move.

LOGAN LERMAN: I didn't take the opportunity to work with him lightly. I was in the office every day that I could be in pre-production, I asked for meetings as many times as possible, just to pick his brain a little bit, and to learn his process. I just stalked him without him knowing I was stalking him.

EARTH’S MIGHTIEST: So he didn't know your agenda?

LOGAN LERMAN: No he didn't know my twisted agenda for being a part of the film! Learn all your secrets! No I just wanted to study how he makes these movies, because he's so good at making a grand film like that.

EARTH’S MIGHTIEST: Tell me, for an audience who didn't know who Percy Jackson is, what would you say to them to get them to see this movie?

LOGAN LERMAN: Well, we the filmmakers, all the actors, or at least my mindset for making this film was we're going to try to make the most entertaining, action-packed, emotional film possible, so that the whole time you can be entertained and walk out fulfilled. But the movie is just badass. To sum it up: Completely badass.
