Snow White and the Seven Samurai!

Snow White and the Seven Samurai may be a bit of an over-statement, but the premise of Snow White is certainly being used as the basis of an intriguing film in development at Disney.
With a script to be written by Toy Story 3's Michael Arndt and Francis Lawrence on board to direct, the look of the film, which has been in development since 2002, is being created by production designer John Myhre.

The project, called Snow and the Seven, takes place in 19th Century China and it focuses on a 19th century Englishwoman who has returned home to Hong Kong to attend her father's funeral. Once she's there, however, she learsn that her stepmother is conspiring against her. Barely escaping with her life, Snow makes it to mainland China, where she is befriended by a band of seven international warriors.

Natalie Portman had been interested to star, but her pregnancy may prevent this.

The below image is NOT really tied to the film, but seemed fitting for this piece.
