Dexter: A Look Ahead to Season Six
According to an interview given to TVline, Showtime president David Nevins has stated that when Dexter returns for its sixth season (presumably in September) the show is going to be returning to its roots.
“Dexter this season will be in some ways a return to the Dexter that you’ve seen in the early seasons," he says. "There’s a really interesting story and journey that he’s going to be on this year. There’s going to be some degree of getting back to his roots.”
One change from the past few years is the fact that the focus will not be on one uber-killer ala Trinity (John Lithgow). “It is not one big bad,” he confirmed. “There’s one interesting story that will move through the season, and it will be cast very interestingly, but it’s not exactly that one person.”
The other point in the new season is that there will be a real emphasis on the relationship between Dexter and his sister, Deborah. In the Jeff Lindsay novels, Deborah knows what Dexter is, but on the show she does not. Nevins notes, "There will be a microscope on the Deb/Dexter relationship this season. Over time you’re going to see that relationship evolve and change, no questions about it.”
