KatwomanXXX: An Interview with Dylan Ryder - Plus New Sexy Gallery
For those who missed it at Comic Book Movie, Earth's Mightiest is re-presenting this exclusive interview with Dylan Ryder, the star of KatwomanXXX. Additionally, at the end of the interview find a link to the new gallery devoted to the actress.
In KatwomanXXX, Dylan Ryder portrays the title role, and in this exclusive interview with CBM editor Ed Gross, the actress, who specializes in adult films, shares her feelings about this particular character and the pleasure she received making this particular film and becoming a part of the world of Batman.
For anyone expecting a lurid discussion of favorite positions, fetishes or toys, apologies. The approach taken to the conversation was the same as it would be for any other actress in any other project.
MEDIA GEEK:
Is this an unusual project for you to be involved with compared to your regular films?
DYLAN RYDER:
As far as being a full character, yes it’s different than anything I’ve done so far. As far as wackiness goes, I’ve been in enough Paul Chaplin movies to know what to expect when it comes to wackiness. It’s actually really fun and it was fun to get into a whole character like that.
MEDIA GEEK:
What was the experience like playing a full character compared to the type of person you’d usually play?
DYLAN RYDER:
I think the difference is that it kind of makes you feel more powerful and sexier, because of the mystery behind the character. Versus other situations where you’re a secretary and they give you glasses and a button down shirt where it’s, like, yes, I know it’s a secretary, but it’s still me. For me, there was a mask and the whole thing and it enabled me to be a whole different character, which is far more sexy than just plain old me. And then you get to keep everything on, and that’s not something you usually get to do. Especially girls can understand this one: you get to keep more covered up, so it gives you more confidence [laughs].
MEDIA GEEK:
I assume you’re not covered up for the entire movie.
DYLAN RYDER:
Actually, in all of my sex scenes I get to leave the cat suit on, because we have two of them: one that allows for the sex scenes… and the other one doesn’t have a hole [laughs]. They always wanted me to be the Katwoman and if I lose the costume, they would have known it was just my character before I changed. Early in the film I’m pushed out a window and that’s when the transformation happens.
MEDIA GEEK:
I wish I could figure out how they get away with these parodies, which are SO close to the subjects they’re based on.
DYLAN RYDER:
We’re loosely following some of the storylines, we spell the character names differently. It’s a parody; a take on someone else’s story, so that’s how we can get away with it. How Axel Braun did STAR WARS and got away with it, for me that’s REALLY close. That one I’m a little leery of how they were able to get that one by without George Lucas coming after them.
MEDIA GEEK:
Are you familiar with this source material or is it totally alien to you?
DYLAN RYDER:
We have some comic book fans in my family, so that helped a lot. I’ve also got a couple of good friends who are comic fans, and one of my former producers is a huge comic book fan – Mariah and I actually went to a few comic book shows together. I always have my personal favorite characters, but I’ve never been into comic books heavily until recently when all of our fans have been sending me comics and clips and they want me to familiarize myself, because now I fall into that whole genre with my character. It’s something I wasn’t incredibly familiar with, but I’m learning as I go. I would like to portray more of these characters, but not the ones you always see. I’d like to dig up characters that you don’t see that often.
MEDIA GEEK:
Obviously this version is pretty different from others we’ve seen, but for you is there a cool factor regarding becoming a part of a legacy that has gone on for so long, even in this sort of tangential way?
DYLAN RYDER:
That was a motivating factor for me during production. I looked up every different Catwoman and watched so many videos just to see how the character worked; the mannerisms of other actresses, and how they spoke. I was able to tie in a few different versions of Catwoman into my character. I was kind of dark and menacing like Michelle Pfeiffer, but at the same time I was way sexier than Halle Barry. I added a little bit of Eartha Kitt purr to my voice. I actually met Julie Newmar at Wizardcon and showed her some images from the film and she was amazed at the costume and the effects. She was blown away by it. It was interesting to meet her and ask her some questions. So I definitely want to live up to expectations and make sure she feels like Catwoman.
MEDIA GEEK:
How would you describe the plot of this film?
DYLAN RYDER:
It basically shows how Katwoman became Katwoman. First I want revenge, but then I find out that harm is going to be brought to the city and in order to save the city, I have to stop Jo-Ker. To do that, I have to hunt him down and I find out he’s not really concerned with capturing me; I’m not his threat. He wants another superhero, and that’s Superchick. In order to stop him from doing what he had planned and using her as the fall guy, I have to then save the city…. I can’t give away everything [laughs].
MEDIA GEEK:
Is the structure pretty much as one would expect: a little bit of plot, a sex scene; a little bit of plot, a sex scene; etc.?
DYLAN RYDER:
It does, actually, but the way that they time them actually works. There are a few times when you get that momentum, but in all reality I just got to watch the full movie two nights ago and when I was at the editor’s watching it, it actually flows quite well. You know there’s going to be the sex scenes, because it’s an adult feature, and you know when that’s going to happen because the intensity between the characters builds up. For instance, before I become Katwoman and I’m rummaging through my boss’ office and before 2-Face pushes me out the window, they corner me, basically. You can tell there’s sexual energy there, because he’s, like, “What are you doing?” and I’m scared and nervous and kind of circling the desk because I don’t want him to capture me or catch whatever it is I was doing. The way he’s talking to me, it’s full of sexual innuendo, so if something doesn’t happen there, that would be odd. And I needed to appease my boss in the movie, and in order to do that I had to do whatever was going to make him happy in the moment because I thought that was going to let me off the hook. So sex is in there naturally. Now when we start our group scenes and it’s Katwoman and all the other characters and stuff, that’s because Jo-Ker has this mist he lets off that’s a huge aphrodisiac, so it makes everybody want to have sex and that makes everybody let their guard down. Whether or not such a thing exists, who cares? That’s where that corny, porno magic comes into play because it’s still an adult movie.
MEDIA GEEK:
Erotically speaking, what would you say are some of your highlights in the film?
DYLAN RYDER:
For me, being in the Katwoman character, there are a lot of times where I have to be very dominant. In my first sex scene in the movie, I’m very submissive, which is unlike me or my character. It’s interesting to finally get to dominant. I play a range of powerful versus being more submissive scenes. I play a really good range, so the fans should enjoy it very much.
MEDIA GEEK:
This must be very different for you in terms of acting a performance with greater depth than you would normally get to play.
DYLAN RYDER:
Oh, absolutely. I had to formulate my character in the way that I would want it to go. Each piece of the script from prior to being Katwoman was different in terms of acting style and character versus when I became Katwoman and the things I was allowed to do. It definitely gave me a range.
MEDIA GEEK:
Beyond a paycheck, what’s the appeal of doing adult films for you?
DYLAN RYDER:
I’ve always enjoyed acting. I used to do theater and I think that, especially with Bluebird and the projects Paul Chaplin puts together, it definitely lays on the theatrics of it all. It’s a little bit of tongue-in-cheek humor when it comes to porn, because we’re real characters and we take it very seriously. There’s a lot of very expensive movie magic that goes into making these, and at the same time it’s an adult feature and we get to have sex. Only Bluebird can do stuff like this and it’s exactly the kind of thing I want to do. If I was always doing simply scripted sex movies, I think I would be bored. So this is far better. I don’t want to just come to work every month and make a movie; I’d rather make a movie every three months and know that I’m doing something that’s far different and exceeds all expectations of everything else on the market.
